Applicant Categories

NMBI categorizes applicants into three groups:

  2. G2(DirectiveApplicants): For general systems pathway applicants, involving both administrative and qualification assessments.
  3. G3 (Non-Directive Applicants): For applicants outside the EU Directive, such as overseas nurses. These applications undergo both administrative and qualification assessments.

Requirements for Registration

To work as a nurse in Ireland, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualification: GNM / B.Sc. / Post B.Sc. / M.Sc. in Nursing
  • WorkExperience: At least 1 year of experience within the last 5 years
  • EnglishLanguageProficiency:
    • OET: B in 3 modules and C+ in one module
    • IELTS: 7 in 3 modules and 6.5 in one module

Documentation Needed

  • Proof of identity (valid passport)
  • Current nursing registration certificate
  • Current professional status certificate
  • Formal qualifications or diploma in nursing
  • Proof of English language proficiency (IELTS or OET)
  • Professional experience proof
  • Translated documents if not in English

Steps to Become a Nurse in Ireland

  1. Qualification Recognition by the NMBI
    • Fill in personal details, submit required documents, and wait for a review (decision letter).
    • Possible outcomes:
      • Qualifications are recognized (can proceed to registration).
      • A compensatory measure is required (common for most overseas applications).
      • Qualifications are not recognized (rare, can be appealed).
  2. Submit Proof of English Language Proficiency
    • Ensure you meet the language requirements with the necessary scores in IELTS or OET.
  3. Start Your Registration with the NMBI
    • Complete the registration forms and submit the necessary documents.
    • Pay a registration fee of €145.
  4. Find an Employer
